Orthodontic Options for Kids

July 17, 2023

There are many orthodontic treatment options available to correct a child’s teeth and bite misalignment and consequently improve their oral health and self-confidence. The right option will depend on a patient’s unique needs, misalignment, and maturity.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces have been a go-to orthodontic solution for decades. Metal brackets are temporarily bonded to the teeth and connected by wires that gradually move the teeth into their proper positions.

Braces are highly effective in treating complex dental issues. They can be adapted for a variety of needs, including for kids who don’t yet have all of their permanent teeth. They are also a good treatment for kids who tend to be forgetful since the hardware remains adhered to the teeth throughout treatment and cannot be lost. They require periodic adjustments by an orthodontist and are generally worn for 12-24 months.

Invisalign

Invisalign® involves wearing a series of clear, removable aligners. The nearly invisible aligners fit snugly over the teeth and gradually shift the teeth as the patient progresses through their custom aligners. Clear aligner therapy is appropriate for older, responsible kids and teens who may be self-conscious about wearing visible braces.

Invisalign aligners are to be removed when brushing, flossing, and consuming anything other than water. This makes oral hygiene easier and eating more enjoyable but also means that strict patient compliance is required for successful treatment. If a patient does not wear their aligners at least 20-22 hours a day, they will prolong their treatment and may not achieve the straight smile they desire.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are similar to traditional braces but use ceramic or tooth-colored brackets instead of metal. These braces blend in with the natural color of the teeth, making them less noticeable. Clear braces can be an excellent choice when a child prefers a more discreet orthodontic option but Invisalign is not an appropriate treatment for their situation.
